An abundance
of wildlife makes these woods a great spot for hunting or just observing a variety of game

The Estelle Quarterman Estate is a mixture of pine plantation and natural regeneration areas. Some natural areas are quite beautiful with mature pines and hardwoods as well.

The entire tract is readily accessible with over eight miles of roads and two miles of scenic trails. There is a new very picturesque service road which gives a second access route to the property from GA Hwy 110.

“Majestic” is appropriate for describing several areas in this unique and diverse woods. For example, one area is particularly noted for an abundance of Live Oak (GA State Tree), Magnolia, Dogwood, Holly, White Oak, Spruce Pine and quite a few others. Of note is a standing Spruce Pine (which has since succumbed to lightning damage) named the largest of that variety in Georgia in 1975.

An abundance of wildlife makes these woods a great spot for hunting or just for observing a variety of game including deer, turkey, and wild hogs. There have also been sightings of black bear, black panther, red fox, yellow fox, and wildcat.

The property has a strong heritage of historical significance. Long before King George granted Waverly Plantation these woods were inhabited by Native Americans, who formed their pottery and implements from the rich clay underlying the fertile coastal plain soil.

During the great logging boom this property bore the North and South Forks of the narrow gauge “tram” railroad that helped transport the legendary longleaf yellow pine, cypress, and other logs to the tall ships of the Atlantic. Rail segments, spikes, and crosstie pieces from this era continue to be discovered.
